Image
Brugel was the only Canadian actor in the Season 1 of the show, and just occasionally. Since then, she has been a in the series ever since. If asked about her part on the show, and whether there were any parallels to her life prior to the lens, Brugel revealed that she used her experiences with racism to relate to the way that Marthas are treated. "I don't just use it to fill in the house as the Martha but, like I've mentioned, my own past memories of feeling that I'm being stifled by circumstances because of race." The race I'm from has never caused me to be physically hurt through my entire life, but verbal abuse is something I've had to endure. Every racial reference which have felt like a hit, or impact on me, can be used on the set when someone speaks of something as hard and biting. It's almost like I punch her in each scene.
